This winter, the National Building Museum transforms into a festive wonderland with the DowntownDC Holiday Skate Spectacular. From December 16 through January 4, visitors can lace up their skates and glide across a new indoor synthetic ice rink set in the museum’s breathtaking Great Hall. The DowntownDC Holiday Skate Spectacular offers a perfect mix of nostalgia and modern holiday charm. Whether you’re an experienced skater or trying it out for the first time, this indoor rink is a magical spot to create memories under the stunning architecture of the Great Hall. The rink will be open from 12 PM to 8 PM, with sessions running throughout the day.
Skating is free for everyone who brings their skates, and rentals are available for just $5 on a first-come, first-served basis. Skate sizes range from 1 to 14, and rentals include everything you need to hit the rink. If you’re bringing your skates, make sure the blades are sharp—synthetic ice requires well-prepped blades for a smooth glide.
The Holiday Skate Spectacular goes beyond just skating. From lively-themed skate nights to family-friendly sessions, there’s something for everyone. Santa himself might make an appearance, so don’t forget your wish lists.
Celebrate the season with special themed skating nights, happening 6PM to 7:45 PM on select dates. Whether you’re into 90s hip-hop, ABBA disco hits, or holiday classics, these sessions will keep the energy and atmosphere merry. Here are a few dates to look into visiting:

Families with little ones will enjoy toddler and youth-friendly skating times, ensuring skaters of all ages get a chance to join the fun.
All skaters must complete a waiver, which can be signed on-site or in advance to save time. Guests under 18 must have a chaperone with them for the entire session—no drop-offs allowed. If you’re planning a visit, be sure to arrive on time. Skate reservations will be released to walk-up guests if you’re more than 16 minutes late for your session.
