Horses, Hats and a Day of Polo: A Local Housing Nonprofit’s 7th Annual Polo Classic Returns on Sept.26th

Most Saturdays in Montgomery County don’t come with polo mallets, elaborate hats, and an invitation to walk onto the field between matches.

Habitat for Humanity Metro Maryland is returning to Congressional Polo Club in Poolesville for its 7th Annual Polo Classic, with two matches anchoring a day that also includes tailgating, local vendors, and some friendly competition along the sidelines.

From 1pm to 5:30 p.m., guests can watch elite polo players take the field, compete for Best Hat and Best Dressed, or build a field-side setup worthy of the Best Tailgate title. Then there’s the divot stomp.

Between matches, spectators are invited onto the grass to press down pieces of turf displaced during play, one of polo’s longstanding traditions and a chance to experience the field rather than simply watch from the sidelines.

For anyone new to the sport, knowing polo beforehand isn’t a requirement. The matches may anchor the day, but fashion, food, tailgating and the social atmosphere give first-timers plenty of ways into it.

Congressional Polo Club sits in Poolesville, in western Montgomery County, offering a different setting from the restaurant, rooftop and festival circuit that fills much of the region’s weekend calendar.

Fashion is part of the occasion. Polo Chic and derby-inspired looks are encouraged, with the Best Hat and Best Dressed competitions putting some attention on what arrives along the sidelines.

Groups can make more of the day through their tailgates, which have a competition of their own. Local vendors will also be set up on site.

The two matches It remains the centerpiece, giving spectators a close look at the speed and physicality of a sport many may have seen in photographs but never watched in person. Behind it all is a fundraiser with a much longer local history.

Habitat Metro Maryland has worked in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties since 1982, focusing on affordable homeownership and helping residents remain safely in their existing homes.

Building new houses is only part of that work. Habitat also rehabilitates vacant and distressed properties, completes critical home repairs and accessibility improvements, and provides education for people preparing to become homeowners.

Prospective Habitat homebuyers take part in homebuyer education and contribute sweat equity before purchasing their homes with mortgages designed to remain affordable.

Proceeds from the Polo Classic support the nonprofit’s housing mission.

The fundraiser also gives people who may know Habitat primarily from its home-building projects a chance to encounter the organization in a completely different setting. The sidelines will include more than spectators and tailgates.

Habitat is accepting vendor applications from retailers, artisans, local businesses, and community organizations. Applications are reviewed, and submitting one does not guarantee acceptance.

Businesses can also participate through sponsorship. This year’s supporters include AGNC Investment Corp., Host Hotels & Resorts, Moyer, and United Therapeutics. Chevy Chase Automotive is listed as the luxury vehicle sponsor, with additional businesses, professional firms and individual supporters represented across the event’s sponsorship levels.

Outside the Polo Classic, residents and organizations interested in Habitat’s work can find additional ways to participate through volunteering, donations and its housing programs.

For readers accustomed to making weekend plans in D.C., Silver Spring, Bethesda or National Harbor, the September 26th event offers something less common on the local calendar: an afternoon in Montgomery County built around horses, fashion and a day at the polo field, with a housing nonprofit behind it.

By the time the final match ends, some guests may leave having watched polo for the first time. Others may leave knowing considerably more about the organization their afternoon helped support.
